Mosquito Control

Mosquito Control Program

Since 2006 Frenchie has operated a mosquito control program for GHC and Bullocks Harbour.

The prime reason is one of public health. Malaria, West Nile Virus, and Dengue Fever outbreaks occur from time to time in the Bahamas and are spread by mosquitoes.

Secondly, before this program started many outdoor activities that we now take for granted were impossible, especially during the summer months.

While the mosquito control cannot be total because of the extensive mangroves to the south and west of GHC, and the rocky hollows in the bush throughout the island where rain water can stand for weeks, the program has made a substantial improvement.

The control program includes:

  • Public information.

  • A fogging truck that tours the island on average once every two weeks in the winter, and two or more times a week in the summer.

  • A barrier treatment that is applied with a motorized backpack in high population areas such as the townhouses, beach villas, marina and Pool Bar.

  • The treatment of fresh water ponds, pools and other standing water with long acting larvicides that only prevent mosquito larvae from hatching and do not affect any other insects or wildlife. The large lakes have larvae eating fish.

Townhouses and Beach Villas contribute  through their respective associations. Single family homes are asked to contribute $250 per year
